Hi RichI've used both myself and the main issues I think were well covered by Gary L. The question is really why would rotary gap (the propellor being one physical construction type) possibly better than a static gap.
The control of break rates and timing of the bangs is most important difference in my view. The RQ or TCBOR is a great gap and I've had good results with it. The static gap fires every time the critical firing voltage is exceeded and will ensure that you get the highest possible bang rate for the primary cap and charging system used. This alone can in my view assist you in getting results particularly if you have a charging system that can delever more grunt than the chosen SRSG system (bps/timings) is optimsed for. That said at high power (10kVA area and above ) there is nothing as good as a well matched rotary to the whole tesla system.
In my earlier work using an RQ/TCBOR gap as a safety across a SRSG set at 300bps (50Hz world) with 90nF of primary cap and 4 or 6 MOTs (with my selected firing times close to top of cycle the system was chaotic the static gap became an itegral part of the whole gap system firing as well as the SRSG and I got really great results at a power of around 4kVA. I should follow up with using software to optimise the bang times for that system actually. Currently trying 100bps 4 to 6 mots (shunts out) and really big primary cap of 300nF anf Freq around 35kHz, (very low), results in a week or two

I am going to ask a simple question but please give a simple answer. I amnot a EE just a builder. I was asking about a rotor gap the other day and itwas suggested I try a propeller gap for my 200ma coil. Well I have a motorfrom a 8" hard drive now and am going to build a mount as soon as it is warmenough to get to my shed. My question is why is a propeller at 3600 RPM better than a RQ copper tube gap? 60 cycle RQ vs a 3600RPM it's the same break rate I think.
