I found a night and day difference between a pipe gap and a hyperbaric gap on my small coil. And the variac is required for me, the vacum motor I am using lowers spark performance considerably at full bore.

Yes, it provides better quenching due to higher velocity air flow.  It has
always improved output in our small and medium coils --- everytime.

Best to use a variac to adj motor speed --- or use a Grainger 10 AMP AC/DC
motor speed control.
