RE: [TCML] Transformer
Rob,
You have been given some good advice, and it is good to see you will heed
it. I, too, recommend using a NST for your first coil.
One thing not mentioned in other comments is that there is no need to run
your big transformer "full tilt". There is no reason you can't power the
primary with half or a third of it's rated input, thus bringing the
secondary output voltage down to something more manageable for a Tesla Coil.
You would still need a suitable current limiting ballast, such as an arc
welder.
Another thought: You could open up the transformer and see if it is like a
NST, having two secondary windings with the mid-point grounded. If so, you
could use just half the secondary.

Hello All, you can better believe I will take heed to all of you
warnings and advice. I plan to shelf the 50kv until I learn more and
gain more expertise in the craft. I have had some hi voltage experience
with large electric motors also I do perimeter security and video
surveillance work at power plants and sub stations and I'm required to
take part in there safety training. I am a firm believer in "Baby
Steps". I look forward to learning from you all in this adventure while
keeping my name out of the obituaries ;-).
Peace and thank you all,
Rob
