The wire gauge is unimportant, as we are dealing with relatively low current. For example, a 14.4kV distribution transformer running at 7500VA only puts out 520mA. A strand of bell wire can carry that 24/7! As for insulation, you can use regular 16AWG THHN wire or automotive primary wire slipped inside clear vinyl tubing. This is far cheaper than special HV hookup wire, and it held up fine for my pig and MOT powered coils.
