RE: [TCML] toroid discharge

Nicholas -
With most coils, the charge doesn't last long. I've made some wax-impregnated coils though (cylindrical and pancake both) where the wax acts a bit like an electrophorus when the coil is switched off. A few times I've gotten a surprise reaching for a coil, picking it up at the top load and then reaching for the bottom of the coil to carry it. Its nothing like the shock of a leyden jar, but will still make you jump a bit if you're not expecting it! I saw this on heavy-resined/lacquered coils too.

I've also noticed my cat Io with this effect. She likes to walk inbetween the coils that I litter our spare room with, and one time she got a little spark to her tail as it whisked around one of the forms. It couldn't have been more than a residual static charge, but it was enough for her to notice it and not like it. She stuck her ears back and ran off meowing, annoyed.
