Yes, I have used both thyratrons and ignitrons in these applications, and
the high rep rates required for good spark "growth" present thermal
problems. Also, the price of thyratrons to handle a 120 pps rep rate become
very expensive. IGBTs are a better solution especially for medium size
coils.
