They do make single SCR's which are a drop in replacement for a spark gap, 
though cost $2000 or more. They can even build them to what ever spec you 
want. They will take 1000's of amps easily and they smallest voltage is 8KV. 
If anyone is going to invest in something of that amount, then just buy the 
proper kit.. I would buy one if I had a few $1000 spare ;-)
