Re: [TCML] Stand offs
I became frustrated at the unavailability of insulators for the top of my
Tesla coils. I didn't want to give them away with a complete coil when I
occasionally sell them on Ebay, so I made a silicone rubber mold of one of
my ceramic insulators, and made exact copies in castable plastic. I do not
assume that they will insulate high voltage as the ceramic ones will, but
they do make a handsome standoff for a Tesla coil with a toroid on top. They
can be seen here:

I used to list them on ebay for $8.00 each plus shipping, but stopped
listing them as work got really busy and interest seemed to diminish. If
anyone is interested in having one, contact me privately, and I will see if
my mold is still in condition to cast a few more.

This topic has begun to intrigue me.
Is there something EXTRA special
about the ceramic material in these
bushings? If not, It occurred to me
that we could easily make our own
with a little clay, and a kiln.
Could be done, i guess.
However.
I've done some casual reading on the development
hours/years/dollars that went into those simple
seeming insulators. I'd buy 'em: Home brew
gets into a LOT of unknowns of
material/purity/lifeunderstress...
One might by analogy ponder the recent discussion
about the conductivity of the lettering on the
PVC pipe (If I'm recalling accurately???) as
illustrating the pitfall possibilities.
