*Winding Lathe Construction (fwd)*
We use two sets of furniture casters mounted upside down on a 2"x8"x8'
board. ( Just about any size pipe will fit this jig and roll smoothly). No
mandrel needed; a very old wood turners trick!
For small pipe like 6" diameter or less. You can make a driving assembly
by taking a short piece of 1/2" birch or maple dowel say a foot long and
slot it just wide enough to make room for a long thin, say 3" wide strip of
old towel to go through.
Wrap the towel around the dowel until the diameter is such that it fits
very tightly into the end of the PVC pipe. You can duct tape the towel
cylinder together for a good tight friction fit. Gives a natural constant
velocity joint and is nicely centered.
You will need a 1/2" variable speed drill that is geared close to 500 rpm
max. Small non geared drills get hot and are difficult to control. (A 3/8"
chuck is not large enough for a 1/2" dowel).
Hand cranks as mentioned will also work. You can in a pinch, skip the crank
altogether if you have a buddy willing to turn it by hand. A Beer Powered
Motor?!
Good luck: Jared Dwarshuis
