Hi Dave,
I don't know if this is what you have in mind, but I've made a bipolar
maggie with oil insulated driver (primary+secondary) to allow very tight
coupling without flashover or corona.
I found two sections of PE gas pipe that would fit inside each other with
just enough room for the secondary to be wound on the inner pipe. Wound the
secondary on the inner pipe, the copper strap primary on the outer. Turned
and tapped an insulating tufnol rod to sit in the middle of the inner pipe,
running most of the length of the secondary, with brass studs at either ends
to allow the ends of the secondary to be connected to the outside world. I
then added two square tufnol plates, one at each end of the pipes, with the
studs going through the middle of each plate. I added turned insulators on
the outer end of each stud to increase flashover distance and finally sealed
polycarbonate sheets round the four sides of the end plates to make a tank
to hold the oil.
Works a treat and the use of oil means I've got a very compact, tough,
10KVA+ driver which will sit inside an 18" cube.
The main hints I'd offer are:
a) oil is very, very good at finding small gaps, and one wetted with oil,
most materials are hard to glue. Spend time up front making sure the unit
is leakproof
b) think carefully about positioning of "air holes" in the inner pipes to
allow air out (and oil in) when you fill the units up.
Let me know if you want more details.
Colin.

Folks
Are there some links to construction techniques to build a oil insulated
Tesla Coil or Magnifier secondary (or extra coil)? Please advise. Thanks
