Dave,

The motor could be either series wound or parallel wound (shunt wound). 

I'd try the commutator (yellow lead) in series with the field winding 
(Red or white), first, and see how it works.  That would be the safer 
approach. Bring up the juice with a Variac and use your ears as the best 
indicator of motor performance. 

If you are adventurous, you could run the yellow leads in parallel with 
the red/white pair, which might give higher power draw and more power 
output.  Bring up the voltage with a Variac, and see how it performs.  
If it gets hot or noisy, then you should go back to the series 
Arrangement.
