Re: [TCML] Teslathons??? (Australian)

Hey Ash..

I would seem to disagree about the regulation of "stuff" ( call it hobbies gone wild) a good example is model rocketry ( well the hi powered end anyway). When I joined Tripoli, all you needed was a valid membership card with Tripoli to purchase motors above the G rating, now you need Federal license to purchase H + motors, you need to have a Federally ( ATF) acceptable storage unit to store such motors at home, you need to take written tests ( 3 different levels) to qualify to show that you can prep a rocket with H+ motors and then launch and recover the rocket ( no telling what new laws have been imposed in the last few years with stricter regulation).

True, there are probably 30K people doing hi power rockets, and the regulation may be needed, who knows? As far as I know of, no one has yet been killed by Hi Powered Rockets. Is it because of the regulation or is it the inherent nature of the people who are involved in Hi powered rocketry seem to be more careful, precise, etc. than the norm? I prefer to believe that coilers are the same caliber of people with the same attention to detail, caution, and perseverance to create a working coil that is safe to operate. Our numbers are growing every time a coil is shown to the general public be it through a museum, school display activity, TV, or the local neighborhood Haunted House... someone from that group which has seen the coil operate was most likely impressed enough to begin building there own coil.

Tripoli started out with a hand full of members same as this list and its "members". Given time and enough "notoriety" ( spelling?), Tesla Coiling could fall into the "need to be watched" group of Hobbyist and the things we do.

In a sense, we are building transmitters which use kilowatts of energy, just maybe some conservative politician will want to pass a law which requires us to pass a test comparable to Ham Radio operators, require us to have a "license", and prove intent of operation of "said transmitter".

All it takes is just one politician with an agenda ( be it an accident with a coil or mere interference of his TV) to kick off something that would regulate our hobby....

stepping down ;)

Its kind of hard to regulate stuff in the public domain.
