On the BIGPIG coil I use a combination of both conical and flat. The first 5 or so turns are conical and then it progresses into a flat primary. Allows for easy tuning in the outer flat area and has a bit more coupling than what a totally flat primary offers.

Inverted cones look cool to some folks, are more compact in size, and provide easier access to the bottom for tapping. They are also more prone to over-coupling , leading to racing sparks, and are more vulnerable to primary strikes. Properly designed, they both work well.
