It puts more pulses per second into the sec which produces a "growing
effect" on the spark off the high voltage terminal. The faster pulses keep
more residual ions in the area of the HV terminal which helps form a
conductive path for the next spark to "grow" on.
I've shot ultra high speed photos of this effect and you can actually see
the spark "grow" with each pulse. Having more power available also helps
this effect tremendously (see the Freau equation in the archives).

if a rotary spark gap is to allow the tank to charge at full potential of
the 60 hz sine wave, then how does a spark gap of over 120 bps offer any
advantage?
