Re: need help/capacitors and AC

Hi Matt,
This may or may not help but, IF you want to be really safe, get
enough caps for your rated PRMS which for 15Kv is represented by
15000*1.41 which comes out to 21210 peak volts. So, thats on the safe side.
Now, to save money, I do know for a fact that you can use panasonics
well past their voltage rating (VDC). I personally use 35 Panasonic
caps in series rated at 0.91uF @ 630VDC. This gives me 0.026uF @
22050V. The cool thing about most panasonic caps is that they are
also rated at 150% voltage for 60 seconds. Meaning that, that 22050V
can turn into 33075V for 60s withought blowing any caps.
BTW, My MMC is small enough to fit in my hand and only cost me $85 to build.
Use Terry Fritz's MMC page for reference to the Panasonic caps he
used. I want to say his were more expensive but, I forget at the moment.

Subject: need help/capacitors and AC
Original poster: "Matthew Boddicker" <shmerpleton_town@xxxxxxxxxxx>
This is Matthew Boddicker
I am currently designing a MMC, but I need the right capacitor for
the job. I am going with cornell-dubilier caps, but my recent
calculations said that I would require around 1200 caps for a MMC.
My question is how does a capacitor react to different frequencies of
current? the cornell-dubilier web page says that the cap can handle
500Vac at 60Hz. if my circuit for my coil operates on a much higher
frequency will I require a higher ac voltage rating or a lower one?
last question but equally relevant. My NST's output is 15,000 volts,
is that the voltage between both output nodes or is 15,000 the
voltage between one node and ground?
Thanks,
Matthew Boddicker
