Seems like a useful and effective technique. How did those guys "listen"? Stethoscope? Audio amplifiers? Radio receiver? Waveforms in a test circuit?

Didn't actually listen. Watched the current through the capacitor with a scope. This was over 40 years ago and I don't remember all of the details. I don't think this monitoring technique was a local invention of course.............
