Re: Not a Toy

Cool. Over the years, I bought many things that are
lethal, or at least very dangerous. Where I grew up, I
could buy all kinds of dangerous chemicals at my local
hobby shop. No more. Heck, I'd consider my two 10 kV
100 uF Maxwells (10 kJ) to be pretty lethal, as well
as my 14.4 kV 25 kVA pig. I have a WickedLaser
"pointer" that will absolutely cause permanent eye
damage in a fraction of a second. On the customs
declaration paperwork when it was shipped to me, they
claimed it was a $7 ball point pen. I guess that means
"someone" doesn't want me to have a high powered (55
mW)laser "pointer". I can't even buy a package of
pseudoephedrine without having to beg a pharmacist to
unlock the dreaded chemical from a locker.

I fear our paranoia may keep kids from being kids, and
latr from developing an interest in science or
engineering. We did all kinds of crazy and dangerous
experiments when we were growing up. Many would be
impossible today. I got my first NST when I was 10 or
12. I know quite a few grey-haired registered P.E.
EE's that I wouldn't trust with one. Some folks are
gonna hurt themselves and/or others, while other folks
won't.
