Well, we must be of the same general era. I used to run that train
so long that the transformer would be so hot that you could not touch
it. Typical underdesign of transformers. I also will never forget
that smell - and of course have smelled it sense through other endeavors.

Wow! I have exactly the same smell-memory from my childhood Lionel
train set. I remember the smell vividly, but I suspect it has nothing
to with ozone. More likely some less than robust insulation burning up!

My memories are the same and go back to about 1936 but for sure
the smell was hot enamel or maybe the varnish.
