Gaston Planté, the inventor of the lead-acid 
battery, experimented with a high-voltage 
generator that he named "rheostatic machine",
where a capacitor array was charged in parallel 
and discharged in series, with the connections made by a rotating cylinder with
contacts properly arranged.
