Dan,
Your coil is "set up" to draw only that particular amount of
current. Are you using the level shifter double circuit with the
uWave oven cap and diode? If not, then the spark length will
be limited to about 12" or so. If you have the doubler, then
it may be a matter of tuning, or grid drive or grid resistor value,
or number of primary turns, etc. Another possibility is that
the tube is weak and has low emission unless you know the
tube has full output capability. So these are some things to
consider.
