Thanks! Now I see. The wording originally made me think that somehow a ball could be manipulated in its size where a toroid could not be. This makes me wonder if we should identify it with a new term, like:
Variable Geometry Ball Toroid or VGBT...

I have often wished that I could have a metalized rubber toroid where I could change the size by adding or releasing air pressure :-)

Hi Dave,

I believe Terry's Piranha II design has the balls where
they can be slid in or out on the rods that they're mounted
on and that, in effect, allows to one to "expand" or "con-
tract" the electric field around the top of the coil. Fine tuning
could certainly be accomplished in this manner.
