Your NST is typically referred to as an 8kV/50mA, secondary mid-point grounded unit.  There are two high voltage terminals, and the voltage from the case to either of them is 4kV, and between the two terminals is 8kV.

You cannot tie the two winding in parallel, as they would be out of phase.  You need to use them in series, for 8kV.  This is why your MMC blew - If you just used 5 caps per string, it would only be rated for 5kV, and you were applying at least 8kV x 1.414 = 11.3kV to it.

What kind of caps are these?
