Actually it was not arcing across the 3 inch gap, it was arcing from one end 
of the gap, to the connection wire which fell an inch or two below it, the 
strike rail was still an incomplete open turn.  I added additional 
grounding, and it still does this (although my coil works noticeably better, 
and produces much less interference).  Either way, I derive what you guys 
are saying is that no, when grounded it does not affect the coil, and when 
disconnected, it affects it only slightly.  Is this correct?
