We have our 91 Amp Irms variac replacement in Cadence software and
Beta testing at present. It uses back to back SCRs and a unique
driver/phase/isolation circuit that drives the SCRs and gives full
control with highly inductive loads --- similar to a variac only our
unit only weighs 2 lbs and will replace any variac up to a 3 stacker
(90 Amps rating). It can handle small 10 and 20 amp variac
replacements without breaking a sweat. You still need to use a small
series reactor when running with a PT, pole xmfr, or MOT.
Watch for more on this in Feb and early March. We hope to offer a
stuffed board with the SCRs --- you just provide the heatsinks. We
hope to be able to do this for around $100 range. It will be very
light and portable and fit into almost any standard 7 inch cabinet rack mount.
I will keep you posted as we progress.

Here's a picture of my upcoming single 833a system
basically in mockup form. I basically just have to
wait for a few things to arrive and then wire
everything up and attach to my RF ground. The 20a
variac is ready and I will be using a second variac or
maybe just a dimmer on the filament tranny.
