Is the 1/8 steel strip in chips or long strip 1/8 by 1/8 x 29 "
I guess, having thought about it that is what you meant - long thin 
laminates , but if so why not long, 1/8 thick lengths the width of 
the cord of the pipe.
(Like the shock absorbing rubbers in a Cricket bat - do baseball bats 
have them? ;)
