Steve, Sean, D.C. -

Anyone willing to provide some additional information on this new method of "stage separation" for a Marx impulse generator?

I would imagine it's the usual scheme of using inductors rather than resistors for the charging impedance. The design gets a bit trickier (all those LC resonances to worry about), and the output waveshape is tougher to control. Probably not an issue in a "display discharge Marx" where you want a HV pulse to make a spark, as opposed to one which needs to generate a particular waveform for testing.

Inductors have been used in fast pulsing Marxes before (There's a patent out there on a Marx that's in a tube filled with hydrogen with high rep rates: >10kHz) I think the Febetron used inductors, for instance, too.

Steve Ward and his friend Sean have pioneered a unique inductive method of
stage separation completely eliminating the expensive interstage resistors
the provide isolation while the Marx generator fires.
