The reason I use double toroids is to markedly reduce primary strikes. To
show what a difference it makes. just mount the smaller toroid on top , then
many of the sparks go downwards to the primary. Same with a sphere.
This is increasingly important with sparks up to 3 times primary length.

The "spark catcher" solution works well, and is easy to construct and set
up. Bare welding rod also works excellent for smaller coils. It is long
and stiff. I just use 3 x 3 inch plywood for the base pieces.

I remember someone reporting that primary strikes were eliminated after
they
put a plexiglas disc over the primary.
