Thanks Gentlemen It's been a lot of fun.
For such a simple circuit the Tesla Coil has many layers of complexity.
For me it's a two sided hobby, 1) The technical challenge of
studying, understanding, designing and building the Tesla Coil.
2) the reword of producing and watching one of the most
beautiful and fascinating natural phenomenon known.
I don't know for a fact that the coefiecnt of coupling is .5
I used physical dimensions and Dr Antonio Carlos M. de Queiroz's
INCA to calculate K between the primary and secondary.
The over all coupling is calculated to be K=.18
On my list of things to do is to build a spread sheet to
calculate coefiencent of coupling using Terman's Radio Engineering
formula.
The secondary has a 1/4" acrylic tube over it to help with insulation.
And as you can see in the photos it's still on the edge of do-ability.
My next tweeks are to try and reduce the corona around the top
of the secondary the transmission line and the bottom of the Extra coil
and see if this will improve the output.

Subject: [TCML] Table top Magnifier
Hello Everyone
I wanted to show everyone my latest Tesla project.
A table top, plug and play Magnifier.
I have photos at this link http://www.flickr.com/photos/21962809@N02/
I've always wanted a small table top coil that I could plug in anywhere
and have a lot of fun with. So I built this coil out of parts I had "in
stock".
I also have been using this as a study coil
to learn more about theory of opperation. Using LT Spice and Exel spead
sheets
and of corse the Pupman List I have been able to examin it's operation
like
never before.
I still have a lot to learn and
I still have some tweeking to do but this close enough for now.
Specs are as follows:
Transformer: Oil burner ignition xformer, 10kv @ 23ma
Capacitor: 8.9nf mica paper RFcap, 45kv BIL
Spark Gap: 3 gap quenched gaps, Gap width set to the max!
Primary Coil: 55uH, 15 turns 1/8 dia cu tube, 8.5" dia .25" pitch
Secondary Coil: 3.7mH, 200 turns 20awg, 6" dia x 7" long
Primary/secondary Coeffient of Coupling: .5
Extra Coil: 24.77 mH, 1083 turns 30awg, 3.5" dia x 13" long
Top load: Spun aluminum 4" x 12"
Max spark length: 16-17"
Thanks everyone hope you enjoy
David
