Re: [TCML] Re: [UK] Coiling in the Media

I think Jeff is sharing some of his hard won experience in an industry that is characterized by notorious moral elasticity.  {I have some similar experience, and you can find it in the archives}

I presume that nobody has objections to being compensated for your hard work, if it's available? If nothing else, it's something that can be plowed back into your hobby.

There are a few cautions, though, once you start to accept payment for your coiling, and that's the specter of things like liability insurance, etc. Once there's that contractual relationship in place, that's a hook upon which legal action can be hung.

It's one thing to show off your coil to some friends or friends of friends as a casual back yard demo. If something goes wrong in the amateur world, it's just one of those unfortunate things, and most of the time, not much comes of it (although your homeowner's insurance may wind up covering something...).

It's another when you do it for pay, because you've just moved into the world of "professional". Now you have some sort of "duty of care", pretty darn ill-defined, but certainly enough for an insurance company who's paying medical bills and looking for other sources of reimbursement to go asking you some questions that can be quite expensive to answer.

Folks who do things like give horseback riding lessons in their backyard have found this out. If your kid falls off the horse and breaks their arm, about 3 or 4 weeks later, you get a letter from the insurance company asking: "Where did the accident occur? Who owns the location where the accident occurred? ..."

So.. on the one hand, if the production company has a budget to pay you, why not collect the cash? On the other hand, think carefully about what that means.
