the "apparent" high wattage loss may be due to the time factors. the pulse lasts 2 to 4 microseconds. so for say a loss of 200 megawatt per second (continuous). if the pulse lasts 1 microsecond u loose 200 watts.
a system with a coupling of 0.6 the pulse lasts about 1.5 microseconds. the hobby coupling of 0.125 will give a longer pulse, i dont know the length off the top of my head, but it is still pretty short.
i think that is why this stuff looks like the "head and tail" don't match. the gap resistance is around an ohm (truely), and the current is high. but only for a tiny while. the Tesla transformer is a pulse power supply. designed right u get 120 pps. each pulse lasts a tiny while.
