Re: [TCML] capacitors

As an ex-marine I'm always honest. Integrity is a way of life for me.

The Maxwell cap series will work in any pulse duty application and is specifically designed for nearly 100% voltage reversals, hi-Q, no internal corona, and other factors. My friend, Bob Cooper, who visits me in Tucson a few times every winter (his mom lives here) claims it's the very best design for TCs. I do believe him because I have been using them for over 30 years in coils and have yet to have a single failure. Many of the coils run in museums 6 days per week with 3-4 shows per day --- and never a failure after over 30 years.

Th;ey were originally designed for govt work but work excellent for TC use.

I'm not in WI in the winter so I can't give you a part number at this time.

D.C.

Now let's speak honestly and accurately here ...... you're saying that General Atomics (who bought out Maxwell several years ago) has designed and marketed a capacitor specifically for use in a Tesla oscillator?

Or are these standard "off the shelf" capacitors whose ratings and internal construction happen to make them suitable for use in a Tesla coil system?

By the way, what's the model number?

Scott

This model Maxwell was especially created for Tesla oscillator use ---
high Q, 99% voltage reversals, etc.

I'm going to run a 25kW 10kV 3phase pig . I calculated that I need 250nF,
voltage will be more than 20 kV (because of 6pulse mode and resonant
charging), so I think 30 kV is the minimum.
What do you mean custom-made cap?

Actually I have lots of capacitors,

what capacitors would you recommend me to build a 250nF @ 40kV MMC?
(for DC TC powered by 3phase pig) how much (approximately) it will
cost? What about shipping to Lithuania?

Tomaš

Hi Tomaš,
The cost would depend not just on the voltage, but also how much power
you will be putting through, as power determines the peak current your
caps will have to handle. Since the CD caps run ~$3.30 each, and you
may need several hundreds of them, a custom-made cap might be cheaper
than an MMC. I believe Dr R. may be the best source for truly large
caps. Matt D.
