Here is another shot from the same evening, you can see the streetlight near the top of the frame.

I spoke to the guy who took the pix and he confirmed he was using a long manual exposure and that the flash accidentally went off at one point.  I'm pretty sure that the coil and toroid were captured by the flash, and then the street light was panned across the frame by movement of the camera.

Anyway, I think this shot should put this question to bed.

Hey everyone, the "mystery streamers" have been confirmed to be a street light.  I asked the guy who e-mailed me the picture if I could see all of the others.  There is another picture with a very similar trail that is clearly a street light.

I'm sorry that I wasted the bandwidth of the list with such a trival pursuit.  I feel like an idiot :-P

That's the flash.  The flash "on time" is at least an order of  
magnitude shorter than the shutter open time.  Here's the EXIF data
