Not everyone uses a separate filament transformer.? I've often

used the existing filament winding for the filament.? But then

the voltage should not be lowered to the coil during operation

because then the filament voltage will drop also, which is not

good for the tube.? In other words the coil should always be

run at full power using this arrangement.



Although two MOT's can be used, the doubler is lighter as you said.

That's the advantage basically.? 



If you run full wave the sparks will look fuller, but will not be longer,
and the coil will draw double the power.

The sword sparks are actually somewhat difficult to produce
(true swords that is!).? Usually the sparks look ragged and gnarled,
or at least partially so.? It is true that turning on the envelope
later will produce more gnarled sparks, but they may be shorter.
