Hi Matthew,
I have built many solenoid primary and have found that if you keep the ratio
of primary to secondary diameter between 2.7 and 3, that primary strikes are
non existant.
(Solenoid primary can also be used for a half wave with centering at the
node.) Forming the coil is easy, I have used cans, concrete posts and even
truck tires. Springback is minimal with new tube.
