hi eric and all
have you considered the pvc pipe method of primary construction it
really does make it easy you know !! so its not brilliant, but i
think youll find that once youve done it this way you just apply the
same principles to other materials its just the same and it doesnt
have to cost any thing extra you can find grey water pipes everywhere
gregs garage tesla coil site has a very easy to follow description of
how to do it , just remember to make more distance between you
primary and secondary, ive had serious regrets for not doing so and
all it takes is just that little bit extra space
dont forget that if its arcing to your secondary like that your
supply is going to die , oh and just in case you put an inner strike
rail (a good idea) make sure it isnt a shorted turn... i find these
things out the hard way!! my "cup" strike rail got so hot around
the rim i could smell it from the other end of the garden and another
melted patch on my coil ( not serious ) cosmetic i know but i am all
about how this coil looks as its mostly bits and pieces, bar of
course the maxwell cap,
for gregs primary method goto the improved junkbox coil and youll find it,
nice sparks by the way
regards earl

I've made the suggested improvements to my primary coil, which you
can see here:
and the results here:

Questions arising from such:
- I've got rather active arcing from the primary to the secondary
now. How do I solve this. More layers of shellac on the secondary?
Even if I eliminate the breakout point from the secondary that I
unintentionally created, I think it's just going to arc from the
first turn to the secondary.
- Is there any hope of repairing the secondary? Although it has tiny
burnt spots on it, it doesnt seem dead yet..I'm getting pretty good
performance. No shorted turns im guessing. Can I sand the carbonized
areas off with high grade sand paper before re-shellacing?
- Before anyone mentions it, yes I'm still using the same terrible
spark gap. I don't think that's much of a concern at the moment
given my other problems.
Eric
