Dave,
Current pennies are only a couple percent copper, and are mostly zinc inside.
I guess you could use old copper pipe, but copper melts at 1984
degrees F, not something you can achieve without a decent furnace,
casting equipment, and protective gear. IMHO, it would be a lot
easier to start from eBay rod stock.

Perhaps you could make a mold from an egg, get a few rolls of
pennies, or scrap copper, and cast your own egg. Then it could be
cleaned up on a lathe. Someone on the list probably knows some
casting techniques and can advise.
