Re: remote location of NSTs - away from coil base?

Hi Mike,

I have a problem with that theory that I hope you can help me with. For a PIG ballasted at 5KVA, the Cres is 66nf. For larger PIGs, the Cres is larger still. The capacitance of a 40 foot length of RG8U is about 1.2nf. Im failing to see how 1.2nf can resonate with the PIG at line frequency. There must be some other frequency source for resonance to occur. Im wondering if the resonance is with the TC fundamental frequency and the source is the secondary. If so, a 50 ohm resister in series with the coax at the TC end will give a source termination for the resonance and prevent an energy accumulation in the coax.

My first guess would be the pig's hv winding.

Not sure. But something weird was going on --- 14-16 inch sparks across the bushing!

Hi DC,

Do you know what the coax was resonanting with???

Yes, the coax can be resonant under some but not all conditions. When I saw these high snakelike sparks spreadly evenly over my pole xmfr bushing I hit the off switch --- very fast.
