That's true, and has been realized with the Kohl AG, Chemnitz apparatus:

I've seen it working, but unfortunately had the camera not with me.
Interesting point is: the bright zones of the tube are at the current
maxima, in contrast to the voltage maxima of the corona-zones of the
wire discharges. The "lamp" seems to be just a vacuum glass tube with
a residue of probably air only (pressure unknown). The glowing zones
are very bright, compared to the corona.
