Glen,

Surprising as it may seem, you can add an external inductance in series 
with
your primary with only an insignificant decrease in overall efficiency.  
Try
adding a few turns of, say, #8 insulated wire around a 4" piece of PVC in
series with your primary.  This is called an "off axis" coil, because
usually you don't want it magnetically coupled to your primary or 
secondary.

    The extra inductance does reduce the effective coupling factor 
though.  I've used a roller coil to tune a primary and had to increase 
coupling correspondingly but worked just fine.
