Chip,
Just to show off my tiny capacitor modeling library I wrote up in
Ruby
(<
http://rubyham.wordpress.com/2006/11/24/little-bitty-capacitor-model/>http://rubyham.wordpress.com/2006/11/24/little-bitty-capacitor-model/
) - and yes I know it's unnecessary, but it's part of something bigger :)
--($:~/ruby/ruby-circuits-capacitors)-- irb
irb(main):001:0> require 'capacitor'
=> true
irb(main):002:0> c=Capacitor.new (1.5e-9,2000)
=> #<Capacitor:0xb7ecd97c @capacitance=1.5e-09, @voltage=2000>
irb(main):003:0> c**8
=> #<Capacitor:0xb7ec8da0 @capacitance=1.875e-10, @voltage=16000>
So yeah, your calculations are correct. As for the overrating, I'd
think you're ok at 16kV. Anyone else?

If I have (8) Capacitors rated at .15uf 2000volt. I connect them in
series. Would my rating now be .019uf @ 16,000volts? If I was to go
the route of MMC's. How much would one recommend over-rating them for
longevity's sake. For example, my pole pig output is 14,400 volts.
Will 16,000 be enough??? Or would one recommend plenty of over-rating????
Thanks,
Chip...
