Re: unpotting of nst?

Hi,
I think the stuff is very cheap epoxy with saw dust filler. This
place sells plenty of solvents for it, but you won't be able to
afford the hazardous shipping charges ($100 a few years back...)
http://www.dynaloy.com/Products/potting_removers.html
You will need a fire and fume hood since you have to heat it about
100C above the flash point >:-))) Disposal is also a "state"
thing... You also need the usual safety garments and all for powerful acids...
I used to play with this stuff all this time. Works good!! Legend
says it is New Jersey river water... But it is really a Witch's brew
of acids... Don't bother with baking soda, that will just make it
explode... Almost as fun as fuming sulfuric acid...
About 100X easier and cheaper just to throw the NST away and by a new one...
I seem to remember trying MEK and acetone at the lab on some chunks
of NST potting before... They did not touch it. I forget the flavor
of Dynasolve we used, but that did make it "soft" on the
outside... Never tried fuming nitric but it should have dented it
;-)) But the quantity needed is far far outside the magnitude of
practicality here...
All will destroy the winding insulation in any case... Maybe you
could hammer it to get a few useful parts for rewinding or
something. But to make a long story short, a dead epoxy NST "IS" DEAD...
On the good side, epoxied NSTs don't crack or deteriorate over time
like tar. If "you" don't break them, they will never fail... My
ACtown epoxy NST has been through it all,and seems as good as new...
If you want to take apart an NST, get a tar one and a grill,
kerosene, hair dryer...
But far far best just not to break it in the first place ;-)))

Hey Russ...
Ive heard that it can be done with some nasty solvent ( methyl
something) but it also takes the varnish off of the wires too...
the resin is difficult to remove under most circumstances, hard as a
rock, even with a hammer and chisel, it was difficult.
