RE: Schematic Revision

Hi Chip,
I believe that is the preferred way to wire the ballast (downstream from the
voltage control). That brings us to the next issue: using resistance to
control the voltage output. (drawing is that of rheostats). We would be
looking at Hugh power loss at say half voltage while tuning your coil and
Hugh rheostats to handle the power loss.
What you need is 1 or two Superior Electric 1256D 28 amp variacs - (variable
transformers) or equiv which can handle about 7800 VA, two similar to your
drawing would double that. These give you 0-280V of VOlTAGE control. A good
thing! These are not cheap unless you can find a good buy somewhere.
Dr. Resonance seems to find them when he is in Wisconsin. BTW where are you
located ? Alltronics has some new surplus ones. Parts are available to
overhaul these if the windings have not been over-amped. Maybe someone on
the list wants to unload one or more? Give Ebay a try. They show up once in
awhile. Old stage lighting may be another source of equivalent variacs.
Tweak your schematic to show one to two variable transformers. Pig power
costs some bucks initially, but should last a lifetime, which will be short
if you are not really careful with them!
Happy Thanksgiving,
Jim Mora
