I used a 7 amp variac core for mine, and it seems to work just fine.  I
wound two coils of 10 awg, 10 turns each, in the same direction on the
core, then connected the output of each 1256 to one of the coils, then
connected the other ends of the coils together for my new output.  That
probably sounds confusing, but you can find schematics of them on sites
that sell superior electric variable transformers.  My sacrificial variac
was actually a 3 phase unit, so I still have two cores left.  email me if
