FWIW - We have 'hit' cars quite a few times for TV and live productions, and they seem surprisingly resilient.
The body seems to act as a pretty good screen. The electronics are generally buried in the engine bay, therefore very well screened electrostatically, and probably screen electromagnetically to a useful extent. I would image that the car industry's practice of using the body as the earth return for most of the electrical systems also helps by providing a very low impedance ground plane.

That thought has crossed my mind, too, but it seems
that as long as I move the vehicles well outside of the
"strike zone" - say >20 ft, that there are no problems
along this line. I definitely don't want an arc actually
hitting any of my vehicles ;^O
