Hi Terry:
Your post about the MOV capacitance scared me - I never looked into
that. If I had double the losses due to MOV capacitance, that may be
significant, particularly in a static gap with a high BPS. I re-checked
the MOV data sheet, and it specs a maximum value of 70 pF per device. I
measured 4 loose pieces, and they all fell between 39 & 40 pF (anywhere
between 120 Hz-100KHz). So in an 8-MOV string, I'm seeing only 5 pF. I
think the additional losses due to MOV capacitance are negligible, and
we can definitely rule out the possibility of using the MOV capacitance
in place of a separate bypass cap.
