Hi Leo,

Smooth surface allows for a higher breakout potential. Surface
irregularities mean higher local field densities which lead to corona
formation and earlier breakdown (shorter sparks). Since a beach ball is
a sphere and a toroid is doughnut shaped, you can't make one out of the
other. (A smooth sphere CAN be used as a topload).

Hello Everyone,

Why does the top torroid have to be smooth?

Why can't you take a two foot in diameter beach ball and cover it with
tin foil, aluminum tape, or copper flashing to make a large torroid?

Thanks.
