Hi Leo,
Smooth surface allows for a higher breakout potential. Surface
irregularities mean higher local field densities which lead to corona
formation and earlier breakdown (shorter sparks). Since a beach ball
is a sphere and a toroid is doughnut shaped, you can't make one out
of the other. (A smooth sphere CAN be used as a topload).

Hello Everyone,
Why does the top torroid have to be smooth?
Why can't you take a two foot in diameter beach ball and cover it with
tin foil, aluminum tape, or copper flashing to make a large torroid?
