Little ceramic tubes are easy to come by: ye olde style knob-and-tube
wiring stuff. You can buy brand new knobs and tubes at hardware stores,
and there are infinite old ones still installed in old houses. They are
insulators, but not sure if porous. If high-fired (porcelain etc), then
they will not be porous and will not absorb water. Low-fire (terra cotta
etc) is porous and does absorb water. A glaze will render any clay non-
porous, but there is always a firing rest which is unglazed, so no such
thing as 100% glaze coverage.  Finally, custom tubes are easy to extrude;
find a ceramics studio/class and make friends with the teach. --ian
