Hi Terry,
It is a small tube made of unglazed (porous) ceramic. It is 
"Techno-slanguage". Imagine a German-speaker looking up "pole pig" in 
a general usage English-German dictionary. Same problem.

    Sort of sounds like the insulating tubes used in "knob and 
cleat" writing but probably smaller.  The fact that it's unglazed may 
not matter and glass tube (or even plastic if there's not a problem 
with melting) would probably work as well.  As to the meaning and 
results of the experiment that's another matter.
