Re: buying a pole pig

The Y means star-wired 3 phase (3 hots + common ground). The 7200v is delta (3 hots only, each being the ground of the next). To linemen this means that these can be wired in delta in sets of 3 (1.732x the voltage) without the core saturating or the insulation breaking down prematurely. To coilers it basically means that it will do up to (maybe a bit more) 12.47 kV with 208/416v in (assuming you have access to it, usually 3-phase voltages).

Mike

PS - Seems like these labels should be reversed (12470/7200Y) since the deltas see the higher voltage, never did get why it's not.

Hi All,

Just an update, here are the specs on the pig:

15KVA
Rated Volts: 7200/12470Y 120/240
2.2% impedence
Orto Filled

I'm curious what the Y means in the "12470Y"...any ideas?

Thanks as always!

Justin
